Portable Wheel Chair Ramp Usage

Portable wheel chair ramps provide increased mobility for most users. It is important to make sure that the wheel chair ramp has side wheel guards to prevent the wheel chair or scooter from slipping off the ramp. It is also important to choose a wheel chair ramp that is lightweight and easy for the user or user assistant to handle. Some portable wheel chair ramps can weigh up to 50 lbs., depending on manufacturer and the length required for the application.

Manual dexterity is also necessary to fold and put in place the wheel chair ramp. Placement of the wheel chair ramp is crucial. The ramp must be placed in such a way as to secure the wheel chair ramp to the step or curb so as not to fall off in use and cause an accident. Some portable wheel chair ramps can be used at residences for a semi permanent purpose with the installation of “safety pins” (a dowel like pin). Pins are inserted into holes that have been pre-drilled into the top of the step to secure the ramp section to the step. Since portable wheel ramps do not have handrails they should be used in only limited height situations.

Wheel chair ramps are a wonderful tool in assisting you to access your home, business, or other social gatherings. You must however be sure that your ramp is designed safely and properly installed. Hiring a professional to install your permanent wheel chair ramp is probably the best thing to do. If you have a manual wheel chair you will probably need a full 1:12 slope for your ramp. If however you have a power wheel chair or electric scooter the wheel chair ramp may not need to be as gentle a slope. A professional contractor will help you decide the wheel chair ramp that is best for you and your circumstances if it will be permanently installed. There are many different materials available for wheel chair ramps.
