Recliner Chairs Safety

1stSeniorCare considers safety to be number one in the use of its products and particularly recliner chairs.  Recliner chairs by their nature and design use mechanical leverage to assist the user.  Even though difficult, please read the incidents below regarding recliner chairs safety.

The Medical Devices Agency (MDA) has been informed of a fatal accident involving an eight year old child who was operating an electric lift and recliner chair. The child was lying underneath the leg rest and as the chair was descending became entrapped between the moving and fixed horizontal bars at the front of the recliner chair.  What a tragedy.

MDA has also been advised from overseas of a recent incident involving two small children playing with a recliner chair, when one of them crawled inside it and was crushed to death. An earlier incident, in the UK, with an electrically powered recliner chair crushed a pet dog.

These incidents can happen with a range of models and the potential for entrapment is greatest as the raised/tilted chair body moves downwards from its raised position. The main risks of entrapment are between the horizontal bars at the front of the recliner chair, underneath the leg rest and underneath the recliner chair on both sides and at the rear.

As part of MDA's Adverse Incident Investigation a meeting was held with representatives from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Local Authorities Coordinating body on Food and Trading Standards (LACOTS), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA). The purpose of the meeting was to initiate actions to address safety issues for these recliner chairs. Since this meeting BHTA has issued a Press Release entitled Electrically Operated Lift and Recliner Chairs - Avoiding accidents with children. E-mail: mb-mda-aic@doh.gsi.gov.uk   Please write them for further information about recliner chairs safety.
