Recliner Chairs Specification

Recliner chairs have several different types of support; webbing, slats, sling straps or springs. The type of support on the recliner chair depends on the design, size and amount of support or softness desired. Don’t underestimate the importance of these specifications.  Recliner chairs comfort is dependent on getting the tension of webbing and fully resilient padding.

The quality and quantity of padding are perhaps the most important features of recliner chairs. The main spring systems used in all upholstered furniture including recliner chairs are; eight way hand tied and no sag, no sag or sinuous springs, and other types such as coils.

Eight way hand tied and no sag spring systems for recliner chairs are considered a sign of quality due to their comfort and durability. These coils are attached to the webbing on the bottom of the sofa or recliner chair and tied with twine to surrounding coils in eight different spots to prevent shifting.

No sag or sinuous spring systems are S shaped wires that are fastened to the front of the rail and run from the front to the back of a solid base piece every few inches. These coils are less costly but are a sign of a lesser quality for recliner chairs. Other types of coils like the single coil, double core coil, zigzag coil, and back springs are 4 way hand tied.  (These are considered of standard quality in recliner chairs.)

Padding affects the comfort and durability of  recliner chairs. The frame should be padded in such a way so the padding doesn’t move against the frame. This prevents fabric wear and adds comfort and softness to the recliner. Cotton and Polydacron are the most popular frame padding materials for recliner chairs.

Cushions on recliner chairs are generally filled with one of the following materials; blendown, high density polyurethane foam, and spring down. Blendown is a combination of down and feathers wrapped around a foam core and then encased with a muslin bag. This cushion provides the softest feeling but will require periodic fluffing to retain its shape.

High density polyurethane foam that is wrapped in Dacron is the most common type of cushion filling. The density of the foam and the quality of the Dacron usually determine the softness of seating in recliner chairs.

Spring down is characterized by inner spring coils surrounded by foam and wrapped in Dacron and then inserted in a muslin bag with Dacron fiber.

Encasing cushion filling in a bag helps the cushion retain its shape. All cushions should fit snugly and buttons should be sewn on securely in new recliner chairs. The padding on the seat, seat back and arms of recliner chairs should all be hand sewn.  These are marks of quality made recliner chairs.
