Pressure Ulcers Elderly Facts

For example, 65 percent of elderly patients hospitalized with hip fractures develop pressure ulcers. For the elderly pressure ulcers can cause both pain and disfigurement These hip fractures reduce movement due to the restraint of the individual to reduce femur end or hip socket damage during healing.  Reduced movement reduces blood flow in fragile tissues under pressure causing the beginning stages of pressure ulcers elderly. This is both a medical necessity and a catch 22 regarding the elderly pressure ulcers that so commonly develop.

The medications required for use have a tendency to reduce self-awareness as a side effect of the pain management.  This lack of self awareness coupled with the dulling of the senses by the medication makes the development of pressure ulcers elderly more likely.

In absolute numbers, patients over 70 years account for about 70 percent of all pressure ulcers. This is where the term pressure ulcers elderly is formed.  It also should clue in the less initiated about where to look for the most information on the subject of pressure ulcers elderly.

Among nursing home patients, the prevalence of pressure ulcers varies from 2 to 24 percent. Several studies have been performed showing that careful wound care, pressure management and appropriate monitoring can combine to reduce the effects of pressure ulcers on the elderly.

The disfigurement from these pressure ulcers is a continuing cause of concern. One study found that 11 percent of nursing home residents had pressure ulcers on admission, 13 percent developed them within one year, and 22 percent developed them within two years.  The discomfort and disfigurement that resulted from these pressure ulcers reduces the general well being of the residents and may be a cause of reduced mental agility due to interrupted rest cycles. There is a solution.

A stated previously pressure ulcers elderly cause pain and disfigurement, slow recovery from comorbid conditions (more than one condition occurring at the same time), and interfere with the basic activities of daily living. They predispose patients to osteomyelitis (an acute or chronic bone infection, usually caused by bacteria) and septicemia (the presence of bacteria in the blood (bacteremia) often associated with severe disease), and are strongly associated with longer hospital stays. The need is now to respond to this near epidemic of treatable pressure ulcers elderly disease.
