Pressure Ulcers Elderly

Pressure ulcers elderly cause pain and disfigurement, slow recovery from comorbid conditions (more than one condition occurring at the same time), and interfere with the basic activities of daily living. They predispose patients to osteomyelitis (an acute or chronic bone infection, usually caused by bacteria) and septicemia (the presence of bacteria in the blood (bacteremia) often associated with severe disease), and are strongly associated with longer hospital stays. Pressure ulcers in the elderly are sadly avoidable, but often ignored by those who care for the elderly at home.

About 23 percent of elderly persons in skilled care and nursing home facilities and 11 percent in acute care settings have pressure ulcers elderly. This is a serious threat to the health of many seniors in these facilities and 1stSeniorCare has products to allow healing of pressure ulcers in elderly patients. The key to treating pressure ulcers in the elderly is wound care including cleanliness and higher technology mattress products like those sold at 1stSeniorCare.

In high-risk patients, including elderly individuals with femoral fractures, the incidence and prevalence of pressure ulcers elderly is over 60 percent.  This is a shame. This risk is due to the lack of mobility, the restriction of movement due to the fracture and unfortunately a lack of education on the part of facilities and some caregivers regarding pressure ulcers elderly.

Risk factors for pressure ulcers elderly include immobility or restricted mobility, loss of bowel or bladder control, poor nutrition, and impaired mental awareness.  Because these risk factors can come about rapidly in the elderly, first contact with the elderly by caregivers should include an assessment of pressure ulcers elderly.

Diet and nutrition can effect the mental alertness of the patient to the extent that they are unaware of the pressure ulcers that develop.  Especially examine all bony prominences on patients entering your facility for pressure ulcers elderly.
