Manual Wheel Chair Design

Manual wheel chairs are made up of numerous components. The first and most important component is the frame. One of the biggest break throughs in manual wheel chair technology has been the development of lightweight materials for manual wheel chair frames. Stainless steel used to be the only choice for manual wheel chair frames. Today the choices include chrome, aluminum, airplane aluminum, steel tubing, and alloy of aluminum and light weight materials, titanium and many other lightweight composites.

The two most common types of manual wheelchair frames are rigid frames chairs (where the frame remains in one piece and the wheels are released for storage or travel, and the standard cross brace frame which allows the manual wheel chair to be folded.

There are also numerous types of upholstery for the manual wheel chair. Upholstery for manual wheel chairs must be able to withstand daily use and all kinds of weather. Subsequently upholstery manufactures have developed upholstery made of cloth, synthetic fabrics and leather.

There are also numerous seating options for manual wheel chairs. Since the seating for manual wheelchairs is sold separately one must choose the width and depth of the seating.

Braking on a manual wheel chair is accomplished by applying your hands to the wheels. However parking brakes (wheel locks) come in several different designs and can be mounted at different heights on the manual wheel chair for the users convenience.

Most manual wheel chairs use four wheels. Two larger wheels in the back and two smaller wheels (casters) in the front. Most manual wheel chairs use the standard pneumatic tires in the back and the standard size is 24 inches. It is however possible to get different tire sizes for manual wheel chairs. Manufactures also offer different types of tires for manual wheel chairs; solid tires, semi-pneumatic, or radial tires. Mag wheels and off road wheels are also available options on manual wheel chairs. Casters too vary in size (ranging from 6 to 8 in. in diameter) and composition (pneumatic, solid rubber, plastic or a combination of these).

Once again there are many choices to be made when choosing a manual wheel chair that will make that manual wheel chair just right for you.
